Sustainability in practice

Reducing our carbon footprint, using resources responsibly, and enhancing green cover – these are not just buzzwords for us. We prioritize these initiatives and lead by example at the SLK offices. We believe that each of us has a role to play in creating a sustainable future. For us, social good extends to our surroundings, our communities, and beyond, using unique initiatives and innovative strategies to integrate sustainability into everyday life at SLK.

Miyawaki forest at SLK Green Park

Using the plantation technique pioneered by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, we converted 30,000 sq ft of land into our Green Park.
  • 30 different species of plants
  • Temperature 1-2 C lower than outside
  • Free of chemicals; acts as a carbon sink

Hydroponics

We use 5000 sq ft of our facility for hydroponic farming, growing greens, herbs, and vegetables without the use of chemical pesticides and insecticides.

  • Over 70% less water consumption when compared to conventional growing methods
  • Over 1.5 tonnes of greens produced per year, throughout the year
  • Produce is wrapped with leaves from ornamental plants within the campus as opposed to plastic bags

Organic waste conversion

With a projected daily food waste of 80-160 kg, tea/coffee waste of 70-110 kg, and vegetable waste of 35-70 kg, we work to convert all food waste into compost to nourish our landscape.

  • 80-100 kg of compost is produced every day

  • Worms produced while composting are also used in bird feeders to attract more birds

  • All materials used in the composting process are naturally available

Rainwater recharge pits

Bangalore receives ample rainfall, making it the perfect place to harvest rainwater and utilize it effectively in our green initiatives at the SLK Green Park.

  • More than 30 rainwater recharge wells at multiple points help improve the water table

  • Covered with layers of sand and pebbles to filter out solid waste

  • Drilled holes underneath help in further water discharge into the earth

Water treatment plant

We have also adopted self-sustainability as our motto. That’s why we’ve ensured that the entire campus benefits from a state-of-the-art water treatment plant.

  • 250KLD plant that can filter borewell water and rainwater

  • The activated carbon filter makes water safer for use

  • Removal of corrosive particles ensures an improved lifespan of plumbing systems, making the building self-sustainable

Sewage treatment plant

The other facet of self-sustainability is to recycle and reuse precious resources like water, especially in a campus as large as ours. The best processes in sewage treatment help us do that.
  • 400KLD SBR-based plant that recycles basin water from restrooms and kitchens
  • Recycled water can be utilized for flushes, gardening, and even for chillers and cooling towers

Better accessibility

At SLK, we know that sustainability also means catering to the needs of all our people and ensuring we make our campus a safe place for them.
  • Wheelchair ramps from the campus gate to all major entrances
  • Wider and easily accessible doorways to bathrooms and other areas
  • Washbasins and mirrors at a lower height for wheelchair accessibility

In supporting the healthcare needs of children across India, we ensure that the underprivileged get the care they need to grow well and lead healthier lives. This thought inspired us to provide support for early detection and correction of polio, corrective treatment for deaf and differently-abled children, and even heart surgery for underprivileged children.

In partnership with Roti Bank, a non-profit, food rescue organization, we’ve endeavored to bridge the gap between hunger and excess food. Working with local restaurants or operating out of their own kitchens, Roti Bank has been pulling out all the stops to provide nutritious and safe food for underprivileged communities. In 2020, we helped serve more than 4 million meals across India with Roti Bank, which helped in mitigating the rising hunger situation that came about during the pandemic.

Our education initiatives are focused on a holistic empowerment of children, so they can truly enjoy their childhood while also learning the skills they need to pave a better path to the future. We believe that all children deserve the opportunity to learn and grow into responsible citizens and future leaders. The way to do that is by nurturing their talents, instilling confidence in themselves, and supporting their all-round development. We ensure that our focus schools get all the resources they need for the holistic growth of their students. Our new building for the Sabarmati Special School in Haripad, Kerala, helped create a nurturing environment for children with disabilities for their academic, social, and personal growth. We also constructed a new, fully furnished school building for Government Primary School at Poojanahalli, Bangalore to ensure there were no barriers to their well-rounded education and that they grow up to be strong and self-assured individuals, on par with

We believe that no obstacle should deter skilled and passionate athletes from competing in their sport. We supported the Abhinav Bindra Foundation in training the Refugee Olympics Team for the Tokyo Olympics 2022, providing Olympian trainers Niccolo Campriani and Abhinav Bindra the right resources to help athletes in need. We also supported the training of national-level sports personnel in Bangalore to encourage the sportsmanship spirit among the youth in the city.

In our many years of working with communities in need, we’ve learnt what is needed to thrive and become self-sustaining, especially in rural areas where facilities are at a minimum. We’ve worked with various gram panchayats to provide pure drinking water to 11 villages through 6 RO plants, installed high mast lights and street lights, tarred the roads, and donated garbage trucks for swift and efficient cleaning up of streets and homes. We also built the Bellur Iyengar Yoga Center in Bellur village in Karnataka based on the teaching of B K S Iyengar, to honor the great yoga teacher’s wishes to help young people in the surrounding villages. The facility, complete with a yoga hall having a seating capacity of around 200, accommodations for around 50 participants, and a fully-furnished kitchen and dining hall, also hosts international teachers to bring the very best of education to the area.

Disaster relief needs quick action and the right resources to be mobilized, and we put our quick thinking into action when floods hit Kerala in 2018. We rushed packed food and essential items to affected SLK employees and 60 other families in Alleppey. We also built houses in record time for families whose homes were destroyed by the floods to help them regain their footing in life.
